“Insite”: the right to healthcare for injection drug users
Thursday, October 2nd 2008
1455 de Maisonneuve W. H-110 6 pm
Gillian Maxwell is a harm reduction activist and an active spokesperson in Vancouver for the “Insite for Community Safety” campaign, which was created as a response to federal government pressure to close Insite – the first supervised injection facility in North America. She is a trained mediator and negotiator and acts as the chair of Keeping the Door Open: Dialogues on Drug Use (KDO). She has made a great contribution to numerous harm reduction and health organizations as a founding member of the Strathcona Health society, past board member of AIDS Vancouver and member of the BC Mental Health and Addiction Alliance. Her lecture will touch on the importance of community involvement, the power of informed public dialogue, and how it can impact social policies on harm reduction and HIV/AIDS.
